You can use the Adobe Gamma control panel to calibrate the gamma, color balance, and white and black points of color and grayscale monitors.
Instructions for using the Gamma control panel appear on pages 16-17 of the Adobe PageMaker Getting Started manual. This ReadMe describes how to use two test files provided with the utility to help calibrate your monitor accurately. (This test was inaccurately documented in the Getting Started manual.)
--1) Follow the instructions on pages 16-17 of the Adobe PageMaker Getting Started manual.
--2) Place "Gamma 1.8.tif" into PageMaker.
--3) Look at the image from a distance of 3-6 feet. If the monitor is correctly calibrated, the smaller boxes blend in with the larger boxes surrounding them. If the smaller boxes don't blend into the larger boxes, return to the Gamma control panel window and move the Gamma Adjustment setting in the control panel window until the smaller boxes blend into the larger boxes.
If your monitor is set up for special conditions, and does not have a target gamma of 1.8, you can place the image file "CurrentGamma.tif" to determine--by viewing where on the chart the boxes blend into the background--the current setting of your monitor. The number that marks the place on the chart where the boxes blend into the background indicates the target gamma.
